The Fourth of July can be a really joyful day. Cookouts, time with friends, kids running around with sparklers, and that shared feeling of summer being in full swing. It is okay to enjoy all of that. Celebration and connection matter, and many people look forward to this holiday all year.

It is also worth remembering that fireworks can be hard on folks with trauma histories, as well as veterans, kids, and pets who do not understand what is happening. Sudden loud noises can put bodies right back into survival mode.
If you are celebrating, consider giving neighbors a heads up, keeping things a little earlier in the evening, and watching for animals who might be scared. A little kindness and awareness can help everyone get through the night with more ease while still enjoying the day.
