Relocation, Safety, and the Reality Facing Families With Trans Kids

In clinical practice, one of the most consistent themes I hear from families with transgender youth is not confusion about their child’s identity, it is uncertainty about the world around them.
Parents are often navigating complex questions that extend well beyond typical developmental concerns. They are evaluating school environments, healthcare access, legal protections, and community safety in ways that many families never have to consider. For some, these pressures become significant enough that relocation becomes part of the conversation. Moving is rarely an easy (or cheap) choice, and families deserve better than having to navigate figuring out where their children can live and receive care safely.
Although I often discuss these issues from a clinical perspective, they are not abstract to me. My own family has had to navigate many of the same questions about safety, healthcare, and where it is possible to build a stable life. Experiencing that reality personally has influenced and reinforced a core understanding, that when young people have supportive families and access to competent care, they are far better positioned to navigate an increasingly complex and hostile reality.
You can read more about this topic and my family’s experience navigating these issues in my recent article published in Slate.
